Top Family-Friendly Hikes in Bryce Canyon National Park
These trails offer a mix of stunning scenery, manageable distances, and engaging features that kids (and adults!) will love.
Mossy Cave Trail (Easy & Unique!)
Distance: 0.9 miles (1.4 km) roundtrip
Elevation Change: 100 ft (30 m)
Why it’s Great for Families: This gem is often overlooked, but it’s a fantastic short walk. Kids will be thrilled to discover a real waterfall (flowing year-round, but especially impressive in spring/early summer and after rains) and a mossy grotto. It’s outside the main amphitheater, offering a different landscape and usually fewer crowds.Ruby’s Inn Tip: Located just a short drive east of the main park entrance, the Mossy Cave Trail is easily accessible from Ruby’s Inn without needing to enter the main shuttle system immediately. A great “warm-up” hike!
Rim Trail (Accessible & Panoramic Views)
Distance: Varies, from 0.5 miles (0.8 km) to 5.5 miles (8.9 km) one-way depending on sections.
Elevation Change: Relatively flat
Why it’s Great for Families: This paved to gravel path hugs the rim of the Bryce Amphitheater, offering incredible, expansive views with minimal effort. You can walk as little or as much as you like! Popular sections for families include:
Sunrise Point to Sunset Point: 0.5 miles (0.8 km) one-way. Paved and stroller-friendly.
Inspiration Point to Bryce Point: A bit more rugged but still relatively flat for amazing views.Ruby’s Inn Tip: Utilize the Bryce Canyon Shuttle! Hop on at Ruby’s Inn and get off at any of the major viewpoints along the Rim Trail. This saves parking hassle and allows you to walk one-way and catch the shuttle back.
Queens Garden Trail (Mild Descent into the Hoodoos)
Distance: 1.8 miles (2.9 km) roundtrip
Elevation Change: 320 ft (98 m) descent/ascent
Why it’s Great for Families: This is one of the “easier” trails that actually takes you down amongst the hoodoos! Kids love walking through the tunnels and seeing formations like Queen Victoria. The descent is gentle, and the climb back out is gradual enough for most active children.Ruby’s Inn Tip: Start this hike from Sunrise Point. Consider combining it with a section of the Navajo Loop for a slightly longer, more diverse experience (see below!).
Navajo Loop Trail (Iconic & Exciting – for Active Families!)
Distance: 1.3 miles (2.1 km) loop
Elevation Change: 550 ft (168 m) descent/ascent
Why it’s Great for Families: While steeper than Queens Garden, the Navajo Loop is iconic for its “Wall Street” section (closed in winter) with towering canyon walls and switchbacks. It’s an exhilarating experience for older kids or more active younger ones.Ruby’s Inn Tip: For a fantastic 2-3 hour family adventure, combine Queens Garden and Navajo Loop! Start at Sunrise Point, descend via Queens Garden, link up with the Navajo Loop, and ascend “Wall Street” back up to Sunset Point. You can then easily catch the shuttle back to Ruby’s Inn from Sunset Point. This creates a memorable loop without retracing your steps.Important Note: “Wall Street” can be steep, and parts are narrow. Consider the “Two Bridges” side of the Navajo Loop if “Wall Street” is too challenging or closed.
Why it’s Great for Families: This trail offers a completely different experience from the hoodoo-filled amphitheater. Located at the highest point in the park, it’s a peaceful walk through a forest of ancient Bristlecone Pines, some of the oldest living organisms on Earth. It’s a fantastic, easy loop with stunning panoramic views that reach far into the distance, providing a welcome change of pace for the kids. Ruby’s Inn Tip: The Bristlecone Loop is located at the far end of the scenic drive, about an 18-mile drive from the main Visitor Center. Since it’s a bit of a journey, consider packing a picnic to enjoy at the tables near Rainbow Point, the trailhead for the loop. This makes the trip a complete half-day adventure.
